The Complete Guide to Cabinetry and Millwork

For AMN Construction crews, day one to master level. Montecito and Santa Barbara, California. Researched 2026-11-02. 18 sections.

How to read the tags. Every line carries a confidence tag. If a line is tagged unverified or confirm, do not rely on it until you have checked.
  • SSourced a source we read supports it (secondary means a trade article or code-reader site, not the original publisher)
  • PCrew practice crew practice, not from a published source
  • CConfirm with building official confirm with the building official or the adopted code text
  • ?Unverified unverified: not confirmed in any source we read
  • ?!Contested contested: sources disagree
Plans, the adopted California codes and your inspector overrule this guide. Source links like [S4] go to the Sources list at the bottom.
Three flags to know before you start.
  • 47 of 66 tools in the tools page have no source URL. They are general trade practice and are marked unverified there.
  • Drawer clearance uses the Blum Tandem rule, opening minus 42 mm. A generic 1/4 in per side rule conflicts with it. See section 12.
  • CALGreen formaldehyde limits come from a code-reader website, not the adopted code text. Check them against the adopted 2025 code. See section 5.

1 Day 1 safety: eyes, ears, lungs, ladders Day 1

  • Eye protection on whenever any power tool runs, in the shop and on site. ?UnverifiedPCrew practice
  • Hearing protection around saws and routers. ?Unverified
  • Wood and board dust: use dust collection or a properly filtered vacuum (HEPA is best practice) at the tool; dry sweeping is not acceptable for silica dust. [S9] SSourced, primary
  • Cutting engineered or natural stone: wet cutting or exhaust first, respirator last. Silica PEL is 50 ug/m3 over 8 hours. [S9] SSourced, primary
  • Respirator users need medical clearance and a fit test before first use and at least yearly; half-facepiece quantitative fit factor at least 100. [S8] SSourced, primary
  • Facial hair under the seal breaks a respirator seal. [S8] SSourced
  • Ladders: three points of contact, never stand on the top step, keep your belt buckle inside the rails. ?UnverifiedPCrew practice
  • Cal/OSHA 1669 covers fall protection for work from thrustouts, plates and beams more than 15 ft above the ground; it is not a general cabinet-install rule and does not cover power-tool guarding. Woodworking machinery guarding is in Title 8 Article 59, sections 4296 to 4325: for example 4300.1 table saws, 4307.1 miter saws, 4311 jointers and hand-fed planers, 4312 to 4315 sanders, 4318.1 shapers, 4324 dust collection systems [S29]. Section contents were not read: open the section before relying on it. [S3] ?UnverifiedSSourced

Go to Tool: Impact-rated safety glasses · Tool: Ear plugs or muffs · Tool: Half-face respirator with P100 filters · Tool: Half-face respirator with cartridges · Tool: Respirator fit-test kit · Tool: HEPA shop vacuum · Tool: 6 ft fiberglass stepladder

Try it Do a respirator seal check, then show your supervisor where the wet-cut or HEPA setup is for the stone saw.
Self-check (3 questions)
  1. What controls come before a respirator for stone dust? Water and local exhaust (wet cutting, filtered vacuum; HEPA is best practice).
  2. How often is a fit test needed? Before first use and at least yearly [S8].
  3. Does Section 1669 cover saw guarding? No [S3].

2 What cabinet and millwork crews do Day 1

  • CSLB lists cabinet, millwork and finish carpentry as classification C-6, separate from B (General Building), B-2 and C-5 (Framing). [S1] SSourced
  • Sequence: field check and blocking, layout, base cabinets, wall cabinets, scribe and fill, tall units, doors and hardware, countertop template, finish. [S4] ?UnverifiedPCrew practice

  • CARB composite wood ATCM is the underlying rule. [S26] ?Unverified
  • Keep the supplier invoice and labels in the job file. [S10] SSource cited
  • Seal exposed cores before install to avoid moisture swell. [S4] SSourced
Check against adopted code. The formaldehyde limits above come from a code-reader website that reproduces CALGreen 4.504.5 [S10]. That site labels its text the 2025 California Green Building Standards Code and shows section 4.504.5 (composite wood products), 4.504.5.1 (documentation: product certification, chain of custody, label plus invoice, PS-1 or PS-2 exterior panels, or other methods the enforcing agency accepts) and Table 4.504.5 with the same five limits; it is still not the official code PDF. Look up the adopted text before you write the numbers on a job file. The underlying CARB rule [S26] was not read.

  • City of Santa Barbara exempts freestanding or movable cases, counters and partitions not over 5 ft 9 in with no power/plumbing; fixed cabinets are not named, so ask. [S11] CConfirm with building officialSSource cited
  • CSLB scope text for C-6: a cabinet, millwork and finish carpentry contractor makes cabinets, cases, sashes, doors, trims, nonbearing partitions and other items of finish carpentry by cutting, surfacing, joining, gluing and fabricating wood or other products to provide a functional surface, and also places, erects and finishes such cabinets and millwork in structures [S27] [S28]. SSourced
  • Subcontractors doing cabinet work should hold C-6 or equivalent. Verify at CSLB's lookup. [S1] ?UnverifiedSSourced
Try it Look up a C-6 license on the CSLB site and write the status on your sheet.
Self-check (3 questions)

  • A generic 1/4 in per side rule conflicts with the Tandem 42 mm rule; follow the maker's sheet. ?!Contested
Contested: drawer clearance. This guide uses the Blum Tandem rule: inside drawer width = opening minus 42 mm (1-21/32 in), stated in the Blum catalog [S32] and quoted by a woodworking magazine [S13]. A generic 1/4 in per side rule (1/2 in total) is not supported and contradicts it. Slide models differ: follow the slide maker's sheet.

The NSI manual itself was not read: follow the fabricator and the stone supplier. SSourced, secondaryCConfirm with building official
  • Cut stone only with water or exhaust and respirator. [S9] SSource cited
  • Construction silica rule is Title 8 section 1532.3: PEL 50 ug/m3 8-hour average, action level 25, written exposure control plan, water at flow rates sufficient to minimize visible dust [S36]; Table AC-1 in section 5155 also lists soft and hard wood dust at 2 mg/m3 PEL and 5 STEL (Western red cedar 0.5) [S31]. Whether a shop falls under 1532.3 or general industry rules was not checked. SSourcedCConfirm with building official
